Side Gig

Term

A job taken on alongside normal employment. They’re a form of freelancing and a way to make additional income.

Income earned from a side gig isn’t taxed through a PAYE system, you’re required to pay any tax on income that you make. Everyone has a £1,000 tax allowance of additional income outside of work, if you earn above allowance, you’ll need to submit a Self Assessment tax return. The amount of tax paid as well as NI contributions depends on the earnings from from your side gig as well as the amount earned from your full time job.
